The Complete Shopify SEO Checklist for Scaling Brands (2026)

Most SEO checklists are a flat list of 100 items with no indication of what actually moves revenue. This one is ordered by impact per hour of effort, so you can stop partway down and still have captured most of the value.

Tier 1 — Do these first

Product metadata

  • Every product has a unique meta title, 50–60 characters, primary keyword near the front.
  • Every product has a meta description, 120–155 characters, with a call to action.
  • No duplicate descriptions copied from a supplier.
  • Every product image has unique alt text.

This tier alone resolves the majority of issues in a typical catalog audit. It is unglamorous and it is where the money is.

Indexability

  • Google Search Console is verified and the sitemap is submitted (/sitemap.xml).
  • No accidental noindex on collection or product templates.
  • robots.txt is not blocking anything important.
  • Check Coverage in Search Console for pages excluded unexpectedly.

Tier 2 — High impact, moderate effort

Structured data

  • Product JSON-LD on every product page with name, description, image, sku, brand, and an offers block containing price, currency, and availability.
  • BreadcrumbList so Google renders your hierarchy in results.
  • Validate in the Google Rich Results Test.

Correct Product schema is what produces price and availability directly in search results. It measurably raises click-through even at an unchanged position.

Site architecture

  • Every product is reachable within three clicks of the homepage.
  • Collection pages have real intro copy, not just a product grid.
  • Internal links from blog content to relevant collections and products.
  • No orphan products reachable only via search.

Core Web Vitals

  • LCP under 2.5s — usually your hero image. Compress it and serve WebP.
  • CLS under 0.1 — set explicit width and height on images.
  • Audit your app stack. Every Shopify app injecting scripts costs you speed. Remove what you do not use.

Tier 3 — Compounding, slower payoff

Content

  • Buying guides targeting the questions people ask before purchase.
  • Comparison pages for the alternatives shoppers weigh you against.
  • A genuine FAQ answering the questions your support inbox actually receives.

International

  • hreflang tags if you sell across regions.
  • Localized copy, not machine translation. A native-sounding description converts; a translated one does not.

Tier 4 — Maintenance

  • Redirect deleted products (301) instead of leaving 404s.
  • Re-audit quarterly. Catalogs drift as SKUs are added.
  • Track rankings for your top 20 commercial keywords.

A realistic sequence

If you are starting cold on a 300-product store:

  1. Week 1 — Search Console, sitemap, indexability. Confirm Google can see you.
  2. Weeks 2–3 — Metadata and alt text across your top 50 products by revenue.
  3. Week 4 — Product and breadcrumb structured data.
  4. Ongoing — Work down the catalog, then start on content.

Where automation helps

Tiers 1 and 2 are largely mechanical: they need consistency across hundreds of items, not creative judgement. That is what UFUQ SEO handles — scoring every product against this checklist, generating the missing metadata and alt text, producing valid Product JSON-LD, and syncing approved changes back to Shopify in one click.

Tier 3 still needs a human. It always will.
