How to Optimize Shopify Image Alt Text for Google Traffic

Alt text is the single most neglected field in Shopify catalogs. It is also one of the few SEO fixes that pays off in three directions at once: Google Images traffic, accessibility compliance, and on-page relevance.

Most stores leave it empty. That is an opportunity.

What alt text actually does

The alt attribute describes an image when the image cannot be seen. Three audiences depend on it:

  • Screen reader users, who hear it read aloud. This is an accessibility requirement, not a nice-to-have.
  • Google Images, which is a meaningful traffic source for visual products — apparel, furniture, jewellery, decor.
  • Every visitor on a slow connection, who sees it when an image fails to load.

The formula

[Specific product] + [distinguishing visual detail] + [context or use]

Compare:

  • Bad: IMG_4471.jpg
  • Bad: shoes
  • Bad: shoes running shoes best running shoes buy running shoes
  • Good: Ruby red canvas running shoe, side profile against white background
  • Good: Woman wearing charcoal merino base layer while hiking a snowy ridge

Rules worth following

  1. 10–125 characters. Long enough to be descriptive, short enough that a screen reader does not drone.
  2. Never start with "Image of" or "Photo of." Screen readers already announce it is an image.
  3. Every image on a product gets unique text. Five identical alt tags on five angles is a wasted signal — describe the angle.
  4. Include the product name naturally, especially on the primary image.
  5. Do not keyword-stuff. Google treats it as spam and it makes the page hostile for screen reader users.
  6. Decorative images get empty alt (alt=""), so assistive tech skips them. This applies to spacers and background flourishes, not product photos.

Filenames matter too

Before uploading, rename the file. ruby-red-canvas-running-shoe.jpg beats IMG_4471.jpg. Google reads the filename as a relevance signal, and it costs you nothing at upload time.

Fixing a large catalog

Doing this by hand across 300 products with four images each is 1,200 fields. Realistically that does not get done.

A practical order of attack:

  1. Start with the primary image of your top 50 revenue products. This is where the traffic is.
  2. Then the remaining images on those same products.
  3. Then work down the catalog by revenue.

UFUQ SEO scans every image in your catalog, flags the ones missing alt text, and generates unique, descriptive alt for each — one entry per image, editable before it syncs.

How to verify it worked

  • Open a product page, right-click an image, Inspect, and confirm the alt attribute is populated.
  • Check Google Search Console under Performance → Search type: Image, to watch impressions build.
  • Run a screen reader for two minutes. If the page is confusing to listen to, it is confusing to Google.
